Longhorn Football Season is here!

Its football season again… Longhorn Fans here is your Schedule for 2009 Season.

Football, one of the sports that puts us together or pits us apart. Whether it be high school, college or pro ball, many people have favorite teams they love and favorite teams they love to hate. Here in Texas football is big, you can tell its football season when everyone is wearing burnt orange teeshirts, shorts, shoes, backpacks, lunchboxes or any other item of apparel. The burnt orange is the color of the University of Texas at Austin’s color, it usually has a logo of the Texas Longhorn steer on it.

Longhorn football will kick off this weekend with a home game vs Louisana, Monroe.

Unrestricted Land for Sale in Del Valle

I love the Del Valle area of Austin, Janie! That area is such a happening place, so much development happening, and with TX 130 right there, it’s just minutes from downtown Austin.

In House Concerts

A friend invited me to a house concert the other night and I had a great time. Are you wondering what a house concert is? In typical South Austin fashion, friends of a local musician will host a small concert at their home. If the weather permits many times they are held outdoors, but because of the heat, this time it was indoors. Dress is casual. Furniture is moved around to make room for guests and food, of course. Everyone is invited to bring their favorite dish and drink if you would like, otherwise you are welcome to share what is available. There is no charge but donations are accepted. The guest of honor, musician, singer song writer, will usually play their music for a couple of hours. This is a great way to hear some fantastic local music without having to go to area clubs or other busy venues. The musicians are more relaxed and you have a chance to see more of their personality and humor. You can often hear others in the room singing along if the know the songs. During breaks everyone eats and socializes. Everything is relaxed and friendly. Laidback as we say in South Austin. And one of my favorite parts of these house concerts is after the main concert, all musicians in the room are invited to bring out their instruments and take turns playing and singing. Everyone had a great time. South Austin and its residents are known for an easygoing lifestyle and unrushed atmosphere. A service station?

Does anyone remember service stations? I have found probably one of the last ones. Service stations are where they put the gas in for you, plus, they clean the windshields, ask if you need them to check the oil or other items under the hood? They will also check your tires. All of this for about 10 cents a gallon more than the self serve pump. I figured the most this cost me is a buck fifty extra. Believe me, I will pay it. This service station does repairs and thankfully for me state inspections. It is Leo’s Phillips 66 located in East Austin, on Airport Blvd. at Oak Springs. I drive this way practically every day and had never really noticed it from any other place to get gas. It is not fancy, you can’t buy your morning coffee, newspaper, donut or anything else, the AC doesn’t work and it is not a large place, 2 bays I think, but the owner and his staff was prompt and courteous. And you can tell they have been at that location for a long time. You got the feeling it was the neighborhood station. It’s a place where the staff and customers know each other. I didn’t wait long for the inspection or the gas. I will be returning and I will remember them if I need repairs on my car. Customer service – Alive and well

The battery on my laptop finally died. Completely. I tried using plugged in, which was not a problem. The problem using it that way is if I unplugged it, it shut completely down. It restarted every time. Needless to say that lasted one day. I didn’t want to wait for ordering and shipping so I went to the store where I bought it. You know, one of the big electronic stores. Guess what? They didn’t carry batteries. I wasn’t surprised. I was surprised however, when the young woman told me where I could probably find one. It is called Batteries Plus. I went to the store on South Lamar. It is located between Bluebonnet and Oltorf on the west side of South Lamar. I took in my laptop, he pulled the serial number and voila! I had a battery. They also kept the dead one to recycle. No ordering, no waiting, the price was comparable and included a warranty. It wasn’t a large store but they had plenty of room and it looked like they had batteries for practically everything. It was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. I love finding these local stores where you can drive by and pick something up, especially for my computers or phone. It is worth checking them out. I’ll let you know of other places I find. New style of homes

What do you think of the modern style of homes? You know, the boxed structures, with what looks like cinder blocks and tin on the sides, strange configurations and odd windows. There are quite a few of these popping up around Austin. Many are designed for maximum energy efficiency and green building concepts. I have always loved Victorian style homes, or the old Texas style farm house. Front porches, round rooms, gingerbread trim, etc., you know what I’m talking about. My own home is 100 years old, high ceilings, 6’ windows, pine floors, front porch and so on. When I first started noticing the boxlike homes I didn’t really pay much attention. They were scattered here and there. Not my style. But then there were more and more, mixed in the neighborhoods, different, but there was an attraction. I started to appreciate the clean lines, the odd shapes of some, the shades and shadows of color, the placement of windows, the mix of metal, wood and concrete. The absence of fussiness. For someone who loves the twist and turns and frills of Victorian design, this modern, minimalist design is very different. I actually like them. I visited a few while driving around south and east Austin. On the inside, there were clean lines, no fussiness, plenty of natural light everywhere. I had the impression of modern simplicity. The rooms seemed to flow into one another. The materials that were used seemed to compliment each other. Everything seemed smooth and light, including the stainless steel and granite. There was not a lot of wasted space. Easy to maintain. They have their own style of beauty. Austin is a city that prides itself on its historic homes as well as the new and innovative home developments so I’m sure we will be seeing more. I’m not quite ready to give up my farmhouse in the country but who knows? They are growing on me. If you are interested these home designs give me call 512-538-5282.
